Metered-dose inhalers (MDIs), which are used by millions of patients worldwide for conditions including asthma and COPD, rely on hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) propellants that are potent greenhouse gases. A single MDI can have a carbon footprint equivalent to a 280-kilometre car journey.

GSK is investing in next-generation propellant technology that could reduce the carbon footprint of MDIs by up to 90%, while maintaining the same drug delivery performance that patients and clinicians rely on. In parallel, the company is supporting inhaler recycling programmes that recover and destroy residual propellants, preventing their release into the atmosphere.
